Sustainability and Climate Change – developing a whole school approach

Large numbers of young people globally do not believe their education is preparing them for a changing and uncertain future. The Department for Education’s ‘Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy’ wants all schools to appoint a Sustainability and Climate Change Coordinator and to put in place a Climate Action Plan by 2025. The talk explores some of the ways to optimise freedom and responsibility drawing on examples of dialogue with children around the climate and ecological emergency.
Coping with Covid – training sessions for teachers
Coping with Covid is a set of fully-funded one hour sessions on Friday afternoons this term, where teachers and school leaders in Sheffield can meet for mutual support and reflection about the pandemic, facilitated by DECSY, an independent educational charity that runs P4C courses and wrote the British Council’s new, Learning from a Pandemic teaching resource.
Gender Action – Gender Equality in Schools
Gender Action is an award programme which promotes and supports a whole-school approach to challenging stereotypes. Tiered progression levels put gender equality at the heart of policy and practice, recognising those striving to ensure there are no limits on young people reaching their full potential. Register your nursery, school or college as a Gender Action supporter and book a place on one of our 'Gender Equality in Schools' workshops.
Non-Violent Action: A Force for Change
How do we all live well together? We have now completed the fourth year of this 'Non-violent action: a force for change' project and are pleased to announce that we will continue disseminating the materials with some JRCT underspend and an additional small grant from the Edith M Ellis Charitable Trust.

DECSY is working as one of nine partner countries bringing the Gender Equality Charter Mark to countries across Europe.
Learning from a Pandemic – teaching resource
This new resource and associated free training sessions will help teachers make a contribution to a recovery curriculum in schools, and beyond this, by providing interesting, engaging and relevant content that encourages pupils to recall, discuss and process some of their thoughts, feelings and memories. Snapshots From The Borders
Snapshots From The Borders aims to improve European, national and local decision makers’ critical understanding of migration flows, as well as that of the public and their opinion of the movement of people.
School Linking and Outdoor Learning
This project supports primary school pupils in Sheffield to gain hands on experience of an organic farm, paired with classroom learning surrounding sustainability based on those experiences.
Philosophy for Communities
Philosophy for Communities is a progression from P4C in schools; realising that adults can benefit from this methodology as much as children. DECSY has been running Philosophy for Communities groups since January 2020, both face-to-face and virtually.
Philosophy for Children P4C
Subsidised training for Sheffield and Rotherham schools. P4C has long been valued by teachers as a method for developing critical and creative thinking skills through real dialogue about issues that matter to children. Whole-school P4C Level 1 training is available for three schools for the academic year 2023/24 (FREE instead of £1,800). For further information contact: bookings@decsy.org.uk
The Schools Linking Programme
The Schools Linking Programme in Sheffield and Rotherham builds links between schools throughout the school year. Pupils enjoy meeting and learning together and the process helps pupils to explore identity, become comfortable with difference and build connections with their local community.
